Apple investigating issues with iOS 4 upgrade on iPhone 3G

Back when we outlined the iOS 4 features missing from iPhone 3G, we forgot one key bullet point: performance. As more and more two-year veterans of Apple’s phones have taken the plunge and upgraded to the latest firmware, slowdown and battery drain issues have become a common complaint, which is even more irksome when you think of just how little the update really adds to the UI. The Wall Street Journal reports speaking to an Apple spokesperson who said the company is looking into the matter. That doesn’t necessarily mean a fix is coming anytime soon, but hey, at least you can hold the darn thing however you want.

Designed by Nokia community here the proofs of the prototypes

Nokia Design by community is the project of Nokia mobile phones of the future, allowing users to vote for their favorite models.

After the initial stage, here you see three prototypes are characterized by common technical specifications that pinch all’N8 winked. 4-inch capacitive touch display, aluminum enclosure, Dolby Stereo speakers, HDMI output and a 12 megapixel camera.

The three concepts are shown in the photo at the beginning and after the jump and are eligible for voting on Nokia Conversations.,,

Dell Streak retailing for $299 with contract, $549 without; Dell Aero gets launch deets as well

So, Dell still won’t say when it will actually start selling and shipping the Streak in the US, but it did clear up a bit of confusion. First off, folks who register with the Streak pre-sale on Dell.com between July 20th and July 27th (yeah, today is the last day) get first access at ordering the phone. Pre-sale-ers will get an email link to buy the phone today, with the handset priced at $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $549.99 without. Meanwhile, Dell is being even more forthcoming in the Aero. It’ll be available on August 9th for $99.99 with a contract and $299.99 without. So, are you ready for Dell to be a US phone manufacturer? Have you braced yourself? Because the time is at hand.

India’s desire to snoop on BlackBerry users continues unabated, UAE wants in on the act

Governments have traditionally had a “love-hate” relationship with technology: they love using it tokeep tabs on you and your cronies, but they hate the idea that you could be using it to protect your privacy. One clear example of this is the whole back’n'forth that’s been playing out between RIM and the nation of India over the last couple years. Remember way back in ’08 when the country demanded that the company give it access (one way or another) to encrypted BlackBerry Messenger traffic and email? Well, it looks like nothing’s been resolved after all: just last week the Indian telecommunications ministry gave RIM until the end of the month to provide said access, otherwise it could ban BBM altogether — much as it tried to do two years ago. Meanwhile, in the UAE, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has issued a statement claiming that “[c]ertain BlackBerry applications allow people to misuse the service, causing serious social, judicial and national security repercussions.” We’re not certain if things will go quite so far in Abu Dhabi as they seem to be in New Delhi, but the government assured everyone that it will find “a solution that safeguards our consumers and operates within the boundaries of UAE law.”

Nokia Kinetic concept revealed in prototype form

Impressed by Jeremy Innes-Hopkins’ Nokia Kinetic concept the other day? Then take a good look at the image above. That’s the actual prototype of the device, which unfortunately doesn’t power on (or have anything to power on), but does look remarkably like the previous renders we’ve seen, and gives us a far better idea of the scale of the device. In case you missed it, the real hook of the concept is an electromagnet in the phone’s base that allows it to stand up on cue, and be flipped down to dismiss an action (like an alarm or a video call). We also now know that Innes-Hopkins worked on the project at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London under the tutelage of former Nokia Senior Designer Silas Grant, who was responsible for many of Nokia’s premium phones like the 8800 Scirocco. Hit up the gallery below for a closer look.                   Nokia Kinetic prototype  ,,,

Microsoft confirms Windows Phone 7 manufacturers: ASUS, Dell, HTC, LG, and Samsung all on board

Microsoft is no stranger to having partners galore in the phone business, but its lineup of manufacturers for the upcoming, surprisingly promising Windows Phone 7 launch is no less impressive. After plenty of rumoring, Microsoft has confirmed that Dell and HTC will be making Windows Phone 7 phones, in addition to ASUS, LG, and Samsung who had already been confirmed. All of these companies should have their stamp on hardware by the end of the year, with the launch of the OS still vaguely slated for the “holidays.” We have no doubt that all five manufacturers can build some compelling, sexy hardware, but we’re particularly enthused to see Dell really getting into the game after the impressive Streak and that drool-worthy leak a little while back. It’s a good time to be alive if you’re a person who buys or uses phones.

Windows 95 emulated on Android, thanks to Bochs and QEMU

That we use smartphones nowadays are increasingly powerful and widely recognized. Every day we are the hands device whose power is much more stark than on desktop PCs a decade ago.

It’s always a certain effect, however, see this knowledge explicit unceremoniously as in the case, mentioned in this post, mamaich developer, member of the XDA forum, which is able to run without too many problems on Windows 95 its Android smartphone.

He did try a port of Bochs and QEMU, two of the most common open source emulation environments. As the initial and absolutely free of any claim of completeness, the results were as expected by the developer and that is how Windows 95, with all the problems of the case, also came on the screens of the droid. Not that much good, clear, but it is always good to see an ‘old friend’ …

Droid X users gobbling up 5x the data of other Verizon smartphones

Been wondering why Verizon would seek to curb its unlimited data plans with bogus restrictions? Wonder no more. Jennifer Byrne, a business development executive director at Big Red, has shared with us the shocking stat that early data usage from Droid X owners is five times what other smartphones are suckling down. Clearly, the jumbo screen is being used to the fullest by those lucky enough to get an X when they wanted one, and Verizon is (outwardly, at least) really, really excited to see such keen use of its network. Enjoy it while it lasts, Droidsters!

MSI launches Wind12 U230 ‘Light,’ shaves two inches and 30 clamshells from predecessor’s hide

Are MSI’s 12.1-inch netbooks a hair too large for you? Wonder of wonders, there’s a smaller version that’s practically exactly the same inside. Though the new MSI Wind12 U230 Light confusingly weighs just the same as its predecessor (3.3 pounds) and is still 1.22 inches thick, it’s got a smaller 11.6-inch matte LCD screen that makes it two inches shorter in either direction on a horizontal plane. You’re still getting the same 1,366 x 768 display, 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, 2GB of RAM, Radeon HD 3200 graphics, 250GB hard drive and sub-par four hours of battery life, but MSI did think to trim the fat in one last direction, and knocked $30 off the price. That makes the now-shipping U230 Light a somewhat reasonable deal at $400 from Amazon. PR after the break.
